Sex makes the world go around. It motivates relationships, marketing, and even business decisions. It’s one of the most essential things in our lives. So, why do so many of us fear talking about sex? Why do we feel shame around the topic of our sexuality, pleasure and our bodies?

February is the month for lovers; not only are we celebrating Valentine’s Day, but it’s also heart disease awareness month. You may be asking, what do either of those have to do with one another? The answer is in the bedroom.
“If you’re having trouble sleeping, it regulates seratonin, and also produces a hormone called oxytocin, known as the love hormone or the cuddle hormone, which increases emotional closeness and bonding with couples,” said Chavez.
“Let’s Talk about Sex…With Our Doctors!”
Presentation by Shannon Chavez, PsyD. – Dr. Chavez discusses strategies for patients to communicate with health care providers about their sexual health, and offers resources for both patients and providers to facilitate this discussion.
Topics include: barriers to addressing sexual concerns, strategies for breaking through these barriers, and conversation starting points for discussing concerns with patients and health care providers. The presentation was part of an event held by SWHR and sponsored by Shionogi Inc.
“Sniffing out love: Valley’s first pheromone party”
“Primitively, pheromones had a really big role for us because it really helped with mate selection,” said Dr. Shannon Chavez. She said we can’t see or even smell the pheromones, but we have receptors in our nose and mouth that pick up on them.
“Everyone’s pheromones are different from another’s,” she said. “It’s almost as unique as a fingerprint.” Chavez said it’s good sometimes to shut off the cognitive part of chemistry and just get back to basics.
