Gender, Menopause, and Erogenous Zones
A Conversation with Dr. Shannon Chavez on Sex The Podcast
I recently had the pleasure of joining Natalie and Bob, the dynamic hosts of Sex The Podcast, where we dove deep into topics that shape our sexual identities and experiences. From emerging sex trends to the incredible transformations that come with menopause, we explored it all. In this episode, I shared insights from my practice, my journey with sexuality, and why I’m so passionate about my work as a sex therapist.
Here’s a glimpse into what we discussed and why these topics are more relevant than ever. You can listen to the full episode of Sex The Podcast.
Key Topics We Covered:
1. New Sex Trends Around Gender and Sexual Identities
Gender and sexual identities have evolved significantly in recent years, and it’s more important than ever to stay informed. In this episode, we talked about the fluidity of gender and how embracing diverse sexual identities can lead to healthier, more fulfilling sexual experiences. As I shared, “Sex isn’t just something you do, a behavior, or an activity; it is who we are.” Sexuality is deeply ingrained in our identities, and understanding these trends can help individuals feel more authentic and empowered.
2. Life in Menopause: Your Golden Sexual Era
One of my favorite topics to discuss is how menopause can be a woman’s Golden Era of sexuality. Menopause is often seen as a time when sexual activity declines, but it’s a great time of growth and change. As I mentioned in the podcast, “Menopause is not a time of endings; it’s a time of new beginnings. This is where you can have sex for pleasure, play, and joy. You can focus on you.”
Post-menopausal women have the opportunity to focus on pleasure without the same concerns they may have had earlier in life, and it’s a time to explore sexuality in new, liberating ways.
3. Outercourse and the Body as an Erogenous Zone
Sex is often associated with intercourse, but in this episode, we explored the concept of outercourse and how the entire body can serve as an erogenous zone. The body is full of unexplored areas that can provide immense pleasure with the right mindset and curiosity. I shared how even unexpected body parts, like the armpit, can be a source of sensation and connection: “You can penetrate an armpit if you are curious enough.”
Understanding that pleasure isn’t limited to specific body parts opens the door to more creative, playful sexual experiences. It’s all about exploring new ways to connect with your partner and body.
If you’re curious about how gender, sexual identities, and life stages like menopause can shape your sexual experiences, this episode of Sex The Podcast is a must-listen. It’s packed with practical insights and empowering messages about embracing sexuality at every stage of life.
