How to Get Started with Anal or Prostate Play
Curious about anal or prostate play but not sure where to begin? You’re not alone. It’s a topic that comes up in my work as a sex therapist, and people often have the same questions. Will it hurt? How do I prepare? What’s the safest way to get started?
There’s plenty of information online, but finding guidance that’s accurate, practical, and easy to understand isn’t always simple. Some resources are overly clinical, while others focus on products and techniques without explaining the basics.
When clients ask me about exploring anal or prostate pleasure, I encourage them to start by understanding their bodies, learning about safety, and taking their time.
Why the Mind-Body Connection Matters
Something I often discuss with clients is how much our brains and nervous systems influence our experience of sexual pleasure.
When you’re trying something unfamiliar, it’s natural to feel curiosity, excitement, and nervousness. If you’re worried about discomfort or focused on whether you’re doing something correctly, you may unconsciously tense your muscles, including those in your pelvic floor.
This can make anal penetration less comfortable, which is why I encourage people to pay attention to both their physical and emotional responses.
Getting familiar with your anatomy, understanding how your body responds to stimulation, and allowing yourself to move at a comfortable pace can make a difference.
You don’t have to know exactly what you’re doing from the beginning. Give yourself time to learn what feels good, what doesn’t, and what works for your body.
Two Educational Guides I Recommend for Beginners
As part of b-Vibe’s Anal Academy, I want to make sexual education more accessible, especially around topics that people may feel hesitant to discuss.
I recommend two guides that offer practical information on anatomy, safety, and gradual exploration. What I appreciate is that they emphasize comfort and understanding your body rather than rushing toward a particular goal.
1. Prostate Play: Understanding Your Body and Pleasure

For those curious about prostate stimulation, this guide introduces prostate anatomy, approaches to stimulation, and important considerations for exploring safely and comfortably.
It’s a helpful starting point whether you’re interested in solo exploration or incorporating prostate play with a partner.

2. Anal Training: Getting Started at Your Own Pace

If you’re new to anal play, understanding preparation and pacing is especially important.
This guide walks through anal training, including gradual sizing, preparation, and learning how to introduce stimulation comfortably.
I appreciate the focus on taking your time and paying attention to your body’s responses rather than pushing through discomfort.

A Few Things to Remember
If you decide to explore, start slowly, use plenty of appropriate lubricant, and choose toys specifically designed for anal use with a flared base. Never force penetration or push through pain.
If you’re exploring with a partner, communication and consent are just as important as preparation. Talk openly about your comfort level and check in with each other throughout the experience.
These educational resources don’t replace individualized therapy or medical guidance, but they provide a helpful foundation you can return to as you learn.
For anyone starting from the beginning, having reliable information can make exploring something new feel much less intimidating.
Start with the prostate play guide or the anal training guide, depending on what you’re curious about.
