Anal Toys for Beginners: How to Choose What’s Right for You
Curious about anal toys? Here’s what to know before getting started.
If you’ve ever been curious about trying an anal toy but felt overwhelmed by all the options, I get it. Between butt plugs, anal beads, prostate massagers, and training kits, it’s not always obvious where to start or how to choose something that works for your body.
As a sex therapist, I encourage people to approach sexual exploration with curiosity and education so you feel confident and ready for all aspects of play. Understanding how different toys work, what sensations they offer, and how to use them safely can make the experience much more comfortable.
Choosing an Anal Toy: Start With Your Comfort
One of the first things I recommend considering is what you’re actually curious about experiencing. How do you want to feel? What are your desires around anal play?
Are you interested in gentle external stimulation? Exploring penetration? Learning more about prostate pleasure?
Different anal toys are designed for different experiences, and there’s no reason to start with something more advanced than you’re comfortable trying.
For beginners interested in penetration, smaller, smooth toys designed specifically for anal use may be easier to explore. Look for body-safe, nonporous materials, a flared base, and a shape that feels manageable.
And don’t forget lubricant. The anus doesn’t produce its own lubrication for penetration, so using an appropriate lubricant is essential for reducing friction and discomfort.

Take Your Time and Pay Attention to Your Body
Trying something new sexually doesn’t have to be complicated. Start slowly, use appropriate lubrication, and never push through pain.
If you’re exploring with a partner, talk about what interests you and what feels comfortable before introducing a toy.
Most importantly, remember that you don’t need to work toward a particular experience or sensation. Learning what you enjoy is part of getting to know your body.
